Monarch Beach Golf Links – a stunning links course on the Pacific designed by Robert Trent Jones II. With sweeping views of the sea, at par 70, this championship course offers a true test for golfers. The signature hole (a par four 293 yard test from the middle tees) with its sweeping view of Salt Creek Beach defines the unique and wonderful setting for this course. Well bunkered, its greens continue to challenge the golfer. Perhaps one of its greatest hazards is not the sand nor the rough, but the beauty of the course. La Jolla

Torrey Pines
11480 N Torrey Pines Road.
La Jolla, CA 92037.
800.985.4653
Price Range: $.

Torrey Pines is one of the top-rated golf facilities in the San Diego area, offering two regulation 18-hole courses. The designs of these courses are similar to Pebble Beach. The South Course is longer and more difficult, while the North Course is more scenic. The fairways on both courses are somewhat tight and lined with deep rough. The fast greens are medium-sized.

Both courses host the PGA Tour's Buick Invitational of California each February. GOLF Magazine selected Torrey Pines for their 1998 list of “Top 10 PGA Courses You Can Play.” Golf Digest rated the South Course as the 8th “Best Public Course” in the state for 1996, and the same publication rated it as the 16th “Best in State” course for 1997-98. GOLF Magazine rated the South Course 93rd best under the 1998 category of “Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S.” The North Course was selected 74th among the “Top 75 Public Courses” for 1990 by “Golf Digest.” David Rainville redesigned both courses in 1975, followed by Stephen Halsey and Jack Daray, Jr. in 1988.
